1. General content requirements

Every manuscript submitted for publication must be a new, original, logically structured work in scientific style that is academically written and formatted in accordance with Journal requirements.

The introductory section of the manuscript article must include the following: a formulation of the scientific problem being presented, substantiation of relevance, novelty and scientific significance of the research, already existing and primarily recent developments and publications regarding the research topic in the science world, and information about the sources and volume of analyzed material. The introduction should also state the study’s goals and formulated tasks, methods and methodologies, theoretical bases of research, chronological and territorial frameworks, and other similar information of note. The main article text must describe, analyze and interpret sources and materials, substantiate obtained scientific results and other key information. The conclusion should state the resulting research results, conclusions, and future prospects and the potential of further scientific development in the given topic’s direction.

Note: it is acceptable for submissions of informational character as well as reviews to not contain some of the above sections.

The Journal accepts submissions of manuscripts written in Russian, English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese or Korean. If the main language of the article is Russian, then the second language should be English, and vice versa. If the main language is other, then metadata should contain the Russian and English versions.

Prior to submitting a manuscript to the Editorial Board, the author must familiarize themselves with and ensure their content is in line with the Journal’s ethical requirements for publications.

At the time of submission of the article, it should not be under consideration and / or be accepted for publication in any other source. If during the consideration of an article the author submits it to another journal, he must immediately withdraw the article from the editorial office of the journal “Vestnik NSU. Series: History and Philology”.

The Editorial Board of each issue reserves the right to make editorial corrections as well as reject manuscripts based on blind-peer review feedback.

The author should be available to respond to electronic correspondence with the Editorial team within acceptable timeframes regarding requests and issues related to changes and refinement of the text during the course of editing. The Editorial team reserves the right to refuse publication of the manuscript if deadlines are not met as a result of slow response times of the author.

Requirements to the content of the thematic issues

“History” issue

“Vestnik of Novosibirsk State University. Issue: History & Philology” publishes content that corresponds with key categories of the given Journal topic: “World history”, “Russian history”, “Historiography. Source Study”, “Documents”, “Reviews”, “Scientific Information”. The issue is focused on publishing content about the following specialization categories:

5.6.2. World History
5.6.5. Historiography, source studies, method of historical studies

The first three issue sections contain published articles about scientifically significant topics. The ‘Documentary Pages’ section accepts previously unreleased sources (generally these are archival documents) that introduce new scientific facts, significantly broadening the notions of historical events and phenomena. The ‘Reviews’ section provides a critical analysis of the latest scientific historical publications (single author and collective monographs, collections of articles, collections of documentary materials). And the ‘Scientific Information’ section consists of information about recent scientific events (conferences, symposia, etc.), various research project results and other significant scientific events.

All documentary materials must be formatted in accordance with the current rules for their publication (the Journal follows the rules for publication of historical documents as per the USSR., 2nd ed, M., 1990; ГОСТ Р 7.0.5-2008).

“Philology” issue

The “Philology” issue of the Journal is focused on publishing content about the following specialization categories:

5.9.1. Russian literature and literatures of peoples of Russian Federation
5.9.3. Theory of literature
5.9.5. Russian language and languages of peoples of Russian Federation
5.9.7. Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek philology
5.9.8. Theorical, applied and comparative linguistics

Submitted work is accepted for publication in the “Linguistics” section based on its merits of novelty and theoretical validity of proposed solutions related to current issues of modern linguistics, based on representative language materials collected personally by the author.

In the “Literature” section, the mainstream scope of articles is the poetics of Russian literature (plot, motive, genre, a person’s image in literature, poetics of image and symbol, etc.). Modern research methods are expected in the submitted works.

“Oriental Studies” issue

The “Oriental Studies” issues of the “Vestnik NSU. Series: History and Philology” publishes content that corresponds with key categories of the given Journal topic: Research, Educational Materials, Translations, Reviews and Discussions. The issue is focused on publishing content about the following specialization categories:

5.9.6. Languages of foreign countries
5.9.8. Theorical, applied and comparative linguistics
5.6.2. World History
5.6.3. Archaeology
5.6.4. Ethnology, anthropology, ethnography
5.6.5. Historiography, source studies, method of historical studies

The working languages of the ‘Oriental Studies’ issues are Russian, English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

“Archaeology and Ethnography” issue

“Vestnik of Novosibirsk State University. Issue: Archaeology & Ethnography” publishes content that corresponds with key categories of the given Journal topic: Archaeology and Ethnography in Higher Education, Science Theories and New Research Methods, Archaeology and Anthropology of Eurasia, Ethnography of Eurasian Nations, Reviews, Scientific Information.

Publication of sources is done with the permission of the Editorial Board.

The issue is focused on publishing content about the following specialization categories:

5.6.4. Ethnology, anthropology, ethnography
5.6.5. Historiography, source studies, method of historical studies

“Journalism” issue

The ‘Journalism’ issues of the Journal focus on publishing content about the ‘5.9.9. Media communications and journalism’ specialization category.

Priority in terms of acceptance and publication in the issue is given to submitted work that tackles identifying and solving current issues of modern journalism study, in a way that is novel and written based on representative factual data.

2. Manuscript article structure requirements

The contents of the submission must include:

     1. document type (Научная статья = article, review article, biography, review on book, report etc.) in Russian;
     2. UDC code (go to the classifier: https://udcode.ru/) in Russian, i.e. УДК 81`27;

Items 3–10 are in the main language of the article.

     3. manuscript title;
     4. the authors’ full names (if the main language is English, the middle name and patromyn is abbreviated to the first letter or two, i.e. Petr Yu. Petrov);
     5. the official name of the author(s) workplace, city, country;
     6. annotation (no more than 100 words) the purpose of which is to pose a specific and concise statement of the study results;
     7. the authors' emails and ORCIDs (web links), the data of each author are put in a new line;
     8. keywords (no less than 3 and no more than 15 words and word combinations in total);
     9. acknowledgements (including information about any relevant financial support received by the author(s));
     10. reference for citation;

Items 11–18 are in the second language (in English, as a rule).

     11. manuscript title;
     12. the authors’ full names;
     13. the official name of the author(s) workplace, city, country;
     14. the authors’ emails and ORCIDs (web links), the data of each author are put in a new line;
     15. abstract (200–250 words);
     16. keywords (no less than 3 and no more than 15 words and word combinations in total);
     17. acknowledgements (including information about any relevant financial support received by the author(s));
     18. reference for citation;

Items 19–21 are in the main language of the article.

     19. main article text;
     20. references (a total of no less than 20);

Items 22 and 23 are in English (if the main language is not English) or in Russian (if the article is in English).

     24. list of abbreviations (in the case of abbreviations present within the article text, reference list or image captions);

Items 25–29 are in English and Russian.

     25. list of illustrations with captions;
     26. additional information about the authors: academic degree and title, other identifiers (ScopusID, WoS ResearcherID, SPIN, RSCI ID etc.);
     27. contribution of the authors (if there are more than one author);
     28. date stamp of when the manuscript was sent (for example: The article was submitted on / Статья поступила в редакцию 18.03.2016);
     29. contribution of the authors, if there are two or more authors (for example: Ivan I Ivanov conceptualized the research, developed the methodology and approach, drew final conclusions, prepared the first draft of the article; S. P. Petrov analyzed and generalized the material of the study, prepared the final draft of the article / И. И. Иванов – разработка концепции исследования, формулирование выводов, написание исходного текста; С. П. Петров – анализ и обобщение материала, доработка текста).

Structure of articles in “Philology” issue, “Linguistics” section, and “Archaeology and Ethnography” issue must be marked by headings of the parts of the text. The abstract must be structured as well. For example:

     – Introduction (here, the author states the problem and summaries the current research on it);
     – Results (the main part of the article);
     – Conclusion (usually, one or two paragraphs).

The structure may differ from that; subheadings may be used.

Below are detailed instructions for the design of each element of an article.

4. General article requirements

Manuscripts for submission to the Editorial Board must be personally checked by the author(s) prior to sending to ensure it has been correctly edited and formatted. The entire manuscript must not exceed 40,000 characters including all spaces and footnotes, as well as illustrations (each 190 x 270 mm illustration is the equivalent of 1/6^th of one author’s sheet, and will count as 6,700 characters of the overall word count).

Specific limits: in “Philology” issue, candidates of sciences’ articles must not exceed 28,000 characters, graduate students’ papers – (20,000 characters).

A supplementary text of introductory remarks about a particular source from the author can also be included with the submission, and can be up to 8,000 characters. Any supplementary messages, reviews and other similar materials included in the submission cannot exceed a total of 12,000 characters. Such content must all be formatted in line with the Journal’s general rules. For submissions made in Russian as the primary language, it is acceptable to not include a Russian annotation or keywords.

In cases when the above character limit criteria has been exceeded for any reason, such submissions may still be accepted for publication only on a case-by-case basis of the Executive Editor’s decision.

Submissions must be made in electronic format, sent as Microsoft Word files (accepted file formats: .doc, .docx or .rtf), formatted strictly using size 12 Times New Roman font, with 1 spacing. All pages of the manuscript must be numbered (starting from ‘1’ in the bottom right of each page). If the submitted work includes the use of non-standard fonts, the font file (in .ttf format) must also be attached with the submission.

The writing format guidelines for articles, quotes and terminology written in Eastern languages are as follows: Chinese – Palladian transcription, SimSun font; Japanese – Polyvan transcription for articles and references in Russian and Hepburn romanization for articles and references in English, MS Mincho font; Korean – ‘Romanization of Korean (2000)’ transcription, Gulim font.

5. Formatting text elements

It is forbidden to do the following with the manuscript text:

• tabulation;
• separate paragraphs using empty lines (or any other spacing type other than using the ‘Enter’ key);
• use macros or save text as templates with a ‘Read-only’ setting;
• format the text outside of the specified criteria and add forced line breaks.

Article texts can use only one type of hyphen – the so-called short dash (Ctrl + Num-). When used as a punctuation mark the hyphen requires a space on either side, while a hyphen without spaces on either side denotes a numerical interval (for example: 2–3, 1920–1940, however if there are extra written explanations then spaces are used: late 1920 – beginning of 1920).

UDC code

The UDC code must be selected by the author personally, as this code will determine which category or specialization the manuscript can be attributed to within the Journal, as the publication in a given category may be important for Russian author(s) working towards defending their dissertation. Affiliation

Ensure that the workplace name is the official name that is used by the organization in both languages you are making the submission in (i.e. use the official name instead of creating your own translation).

In the case of an author having multiple workplaces, if at least one of these employers is Novosibirsk State University, the list must be compiled and numbered in such a way that NSU as an employer of the author is listed first.

Abstract

In articles and review articles, the abstract should contain about 100 words in the main language of the paper and 200-250 – in the second language.

Submissions of manuscripts for scientific information, reviews and other similar categories do not have to include an annotation in Russian, but they must include an English one of about 1,000–1,200 characters.

The Abstract in the second and third languages (if the manuscript and submission is in Russian, the second language is English, if the manuscript is in English, the second language is Russian, in other cases the second and third languages are both English and Russian) cannot be a mere summary of the annotation as it must perform the function of being an independent source of information. It must not contain references to literature referenced in the article, abbreviations, or repeat information already given by the article title. In order to be seriously considered for publication, every submission must be written at a high academic level, therefore authors must refrain from using clichés overusing passive voice.

6. Requirements for illustrations

6.1. Pictures, photographs, graphs, diagrams

Illustrations and other graphics must be submitted in black and white, however a color image may be accepted for publication in exceptional cases only if the color in itself carries an important message, data or features.

Pictures and photographs must not be positioned within the Microsoft Word article text, and instead attached as a separate file(s) in .jpg or .tiff format, and scanned at a resolution of at least 300 dpi (preferably 500–600 dpi). Any illustrations containing invasive markings or blots or an overall low quality of the submitted graphic will not be accepted alongside the article. The image size should not exceed 190 × 270 mm.

Graphs and diagrams must be created in Word, Excel (the attached file must be in .xls or .xlsx format) or vector graphics editors (the attached file must be in .cdr of .png format). The used font must be no less than size 9.

Each illustration must be clearly numbered (the corresponding number assigned to the file name), have a title and specify the original source. A numbered list of illustrations with their titles and source references must be provided at the end of the article. References to illustrations within the article text must be placed in brackets, for example: (Fig. 1, Photo 5). Even if the sentence ends just before this reference, refrain from adding a period before the brackets. If it is necessary to draw attention to certain objects within the illustration, this can be done as follows: (Fig. 2, 5, 7–9); when referencing numerous objects in different illustrations, use the following format: (Fig. 3, 4, 9; 4, 3, 5–8).

The numbering sequence for illustrations must follow the order of their mention in the article text; the same rule applies to the separate objects depicted in the illustrations. Titles of illustrations, graphs, etc. should be indicated in two languages: both in Russian and English. Once an illustration has been cited in-text, it can then be referenced at any other future point in time in the text without sequence restrictions.

In rare cases if an illustration has already been published elsewhere, the author's surname and identifying date must be specified in the image caption, for example: (by: [Ivanov, 1982. P. 55. Fig. 34, 7]) and the original publication referenced in full in the list of references. If an illustration is an item from a museum collection, its storage number or the display case identifier in the museum it is located in must be referenced along with the museum name written in full accordance with its official title.

If the illustration contains several objects, the caption descriptions must not begin with the name of the depicted object, but rather with the definition of the content of the image itself. See examples below.

6.2. Additional requirements for illustrations in “Archaeology and Ethnography” issue

In the case of an illustration containing a collage or numerous images, it should ideally feature four equal sized sections and in any case, ensure that all graphics are arranged compactly, avoiding leaving any large unused blank spaces. Each separate object (image) in such an illustration must be both arranged, as well as numbered, following the sequence of their mention within the text of the article. After the initial reference to a particular illustration, all future references to it can be made in no particular order. Each object in every illustration must have its own number; a blanket numbering strategy for numerous objects will not be accepted. Furthermore, the numbering, along with, for example, leveling marks, inscriptions, section lines, frames, excavation boundaries of the illustrations must not be handwritten, but added digitally. All illustration numerations and inscriptions must be printed in regular (not bold) Arial font, in an appropriate size (based on the image size). Supplementary italicized explanations, digits or other data written on any images (including diagrams and tables, with the exception of separate specific terms) is not permitted. The numbering of items must be arranged in order from left to right, and top to bottom. It is important to ensure that the majority part of any supplementary explanations regarding illustrations is included in the image captions section, rather than as part of the illustration area.

All illustrations must have a similar graphic scale, with the exception of photos where an object with clearly indicative marks in metric system measurements is already applied for scale. The graphic scale must be drawn in the form of a black line corresponding to the size of the image, with dividing vertical lined bars (each bar no more than 1/10^th of the total length of the scale). The first and last division bars must indicate the corresponding metric measurement units in Arabic numerals. The graphic scale does not have to be specified only in exceptional cases, and therefore the words “without scale” must be written in the image caption or on the image itself. The requirement to provide a scale does not apply to images that are typological and chronological tables, where only schematic images of places and objects are illustrated.

6.3. Formatting language illustrative material

All illustrative material (these may be a word, phraseological unit, word combination, sentence, etc.) must be italicized; the interpretation of the meaning of a word and semes must be placed inside single quotation marks ‘....’; the name of a concept must be written in capital letters and italicized (for example: the concept of KNOWLEDGE, the conceptual sphere of RELIGION). In Russian, text quotes must be enclosed in corner brackets («…»); however if a quoted piece of text contains another quote citing within it, the latter should be enclosed by double quotation marks («…“…”…», «… “…”»). Referencing the source of illustrative material of a fragment of someone else's text must be done at the end of the relevant sentence in round brackets, for example: Supervision of banks’ activities should be in good hands. In order to examine financial transactions through fingers when necessary? (Novaya Gazeta, 2007. № 7). If the illustrative material was sourced from the internet, the reference to it must be made in a footnote. If several references are made referring to the same online source, then it should be listed in the list of sources at the end of the article, for example: NCRL – National Corpus of the Russian Language (http://www.ruscorpora.ru).

7. Requirements for table formatting

Tables must be positioned alongside the article text and be numbered and titled and have a supplementary note-reference placed directly under the table, for example:

References to tables in the article text must be made in brackets for example: (Table 2; Table 4–5).

p>If the article contains a table that has been published elsewhere, the image caption must specify the author’s surname and brief identifying data, for example: (by: [Ivanov, 1982. P. 55. Fig. 34, 7]). The original source must then be fully referenced in the References.

Captions for tables must be provided in both Russian and English.

8. Formatting bibliographic references

8.1. Formatting unpublished sources

All references of archival documents¹, unpublished materials (such as private interviews, but not including dissertations and their abstracts) and materials published online that are not subject to a bibliographic description needed for the references list, should be made in the form of a footnote² (the footnote text should be located at the bottom of the page, which can be created automatically in Microsoft Word using the ‘Insert Footnote’ command). If the article contains several references to an archive, the author may put its abbreviated name in the brackets in the first reference, and then, may use the abbreviated name.

In references to archive sources, the abbreviations used in the archives must be applied.

8.2. References formatting in the body of the article

In-text referencing must be done in square brackets featuring: the surname(s) of the author(s) or the first words of the publication title if there are no authors, year of publication, and page number(s). For example: [Ivanov, 1962. P. 62], [Ivanov, Petrov, 1997. P. 39–45] or [Encyclopedia of Games, 1989. Vol. 1. P. 184]. If there are three or more authors, the in-text citation must consist of the first author followed by ‘et al.’, for example: [Ivanov еt al., 1999. P. 45]; however in the actual References list, all authors of the publication must be listed. In cases where both the surname of the author and the publication year are identical, the year of publication is supplemented by a separate identifying letter in both the in-text citation and full reference. In-text citation example: [Ivanov, 1997a. P. 49; Ivanov, 1997b. P. 14]. Author surnames and initials must be separated by a space (in-text, and in the list of references). A space is also required after commas, and after the period following the ‘P’ abbreviation for ‘page number(s)’.

The following types of references are put in brackets:

– newspaper publications without indicating its author: “Citation from a newspaper” (Sovetskaya Sibir’, 1925, August 13. p. 5). Do not put the newspaper in the list of references;

– citations from the Bible; the notions of books and verses are standard: “Citation” (Matthew 10:8, Luke 10:9 and 9:2, and Acts 5:16). Do not put the Bible in the list of references;

– citations from classical (ancient and medieval) texts: “Citation” (Herod., VII, 64); “Citation” (Plin. Nat. hist. V. 4.29).

Если ссылка на опубликованную работу дается в подстраничной сноске, при повторной ссылке допускается сокращение названия до одного слова или, при наличии нескольких источников с одинаковыми названиями, до минимального количества слов, которое обеспечит однозначную идентификацию источника.

8.3. Formatting the list of references

The following sources are indicated in the list of references: monographs, articles in journals, collections of works, conference papers, theses and abstracts of theses by candidates and doctors of sciences, reviews, textbooks, anthologies, dictionaries, newspaper publications (containing the authors’ names), online-publications.

Any works not linked to an in-text reference must not be listed in the references list.

The Editorial Board strongly recommend minimizing self-referencing.

In the list of references (and list of sources as well), all reference information about publications in Cyrillic, Greek and Asian (including Arabic) languages must be transliterated into Latin characters and translated into English (publications in all other languages must also be translated into English, and if the language is character-based, a transliteration into Russian using Cyrillic must be also included). An English translation of a reference is not needed if the publication was made in a European language which uses Latin lettering (German, French, etc.). All Latin character-based references must be organized alphabetically in one list.

The bibliographic description of each publication being referenced must include:

– the surnames and initials of the authors (all authors must be listed) – must be bolded,
– the full title of the cited work, the genre of the publication in which it was published (monograph, collective monograph, collection of articles, collection of scientific articles, etc.),
– responsible editor (assistant editor) – if available,
– title of the publication in which it was published (for articles),
– city of publication (for monographs, collections, textbooks),
– publishing house (for monographs, collections, textbooks),
– year of publication,
– volume number (for multi-volume editions),
– issue number (for periodicals),
– the volume of the publication (amount of pages for monographs, the first and last pages for articles, thesis),
– and DOI – if available.

The formatting requirements are closest to that of Harvard – British Standard, i.e. simplified citations, giving minimum information – authors, title of the work, the source for articles (italicized), the volume number (vol.), issue number (no.), city of publication, publishing house, year of publication, pages referenced. However, unlike the Harvard – British Standard, it is necessary to list all authors, refrain from adding a comma between an author’s surname and initials, referenced work titles should not be enclosed in quotation marks, and the year must be specified after the title of a referenced Journal. For transliterated references, the end of each reference entry should specify the original language of the publication in brackets, for example: (in Russ.), (in Greek), (in Jap.).

How to abbreviate and to specify separate part of the references:

Elements of a reference are separated with comma: Vladivostok, FESU, 2002, 28 p. (in Russ.)

When two or more cities are specified they must be separated by commas.

When transliterating Cyrillic items of the list of references, the authors should use BSI format. 8.4. Formatting list of sources and list of abbreviations

When referencing published sources within the text, abbreviations can be used. For example: [PSZ-I, 1830. T. 24. C. 463], and in this case, the decoded abbreviation must also be provided in the list of References or List of Sources. When referencing ancient and medieval authors, these must be written in brackets with the generally accepted abbreviations and an indication of the sections of the work, instead of the page number(s). For example: (Plut., T. Gracch., 8-9). The same can be done when referencing ancient and medieval sources. For example: (Cato, De agr., III, 1; Lex agr., 26), however in this case a complete bibliographic description must also be provided in the list of References.

When referencing published newspaper articles, it is necessary to indicate the author (or the article title if there is no author), year of publication and the page(s), for example: [Petrov, 1926. P. 3; To the heights of communism, 1935. P. 1]. If both the author and title of the publication do not exist, then the reference must include the name of the newspaper, year, issue or issue date and page(s) all indicated in brackets (Sibir, 1886, № 15. P. 7, Pravda, 1967. May 15, P. 4).

If the article contains abbreviations, the list of abbreviation is needed. It is positioned after the list of references and list of sources. The abbreviations must be put in the alphabetical order. The official names of archives must be used.

8.5. Formatting examples of references

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. The manuscripts are accepted if has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

2. The materials should be prepared in a format OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or World Perfect.

3. Internet links are provided as a complete URL. 

4. Text should be typed with an interval of one and a half line spacing, font Times New Roman, 14 pt; to highlight the accents it is recommended to use italics rather than underlining (except Internet links). All images, graphics and tables are placed within the text according to the meaning of the particular part of text  (and not at the end of the document).

5. Text should follow the stylistic and bibliography requirements as stated in  Regulations  located in the Part "About Us." 

6. Please, remove the authors' names from the title of the article and other parts of the document to ensure the  anonymity of reviewing.
